Faculty of Science

Biology, Physics, Horticulture & Chemistry

The course provides a solid background for students intending to further their education in the sciences so they can enter vocations where the application of scientific principles and knowledge is necessary.

The faculty of science offers as specialist subject areas:

  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Horticulture
  • Chemistry
  • General Science

The staff not only work to achieve academic excellence, but also to inspire our students to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the world they live in.

Encouraging students to excel in Science

The St John's College Science Department aims to encourage students to excel in science.

Years 9 and 10

A General Science course is offered to students at Year 9 and 10 so they can then build on that foundation or specialise in one or two of the sciences in year 11, 12 and 13.

There is also a Year 10 Horticulture option.

Year 11

General Science is recommended for all students, but they can select from two strands, depending on their academic needs.

There is also a Year 11 Horticulture option.

Years 12 and 13

Students can then specialise in any of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Horticulture at Years12 and 13.

An alternative science pathway for students not wishing to specialise is provided by our Year 12 General Science course and Year 13 Applied Science course.

An NCEA science qualification at Year 12 and 13 is the pre-eminent means of achieving university and polytechnic entrance.

A Scholarship group by application also meets to provide more of an academic challenge to our more able students.

If you have any questions or require more information on these subjects, please refer to the options booklets.
