St John’s College will join the prestigious Central North Island (CNI) 1st XV Rugby competition in the 2018 season. Billed as a premier secondary school competition, St John’s strong results in recent seasons has earned them entry to compete further afield against other high performing schools.

This is a massively exciting opportunity for rugby players at St John’s. The College had an outstanding season in 2016, winning the Counties-Manukau title and finished a strong 3rd in this competition in 2017. St John’s has also claimed 2nd top school in the Waikato in the past two seasons. The mark of a strong rugby school is depth, and St John’s Development XV won the Waikato 1st XV competition in 2016.

St John’s College has also produced players in recent years that go on to regional and national selection. Siave Seti was a standout winger for the 1st XV this year and his performances earned him selection in the NZSS Barbarians team. Four players from the 2016 team represented Waikato in the final of the National U19 tournament in Taupo.

This consistently strong performance has been recognized with an invitation to join the CNI competition in 2018. St John’s will compete against ten other schools spanning from Pukekohe to as far south as Masterton. This competition is producing players that make the NZSS and NZSS Barbarians sides and the top teams in CNI can match it with Super 8 and Auckland’s 1A Ist XV’s.
