Athletic Sports Day 2014

Our 2014 Athletics Sports day was held on Thursday 13 February and is likely to be remembered as the year of breakages.

Amazingly five records were broken on the day, three on the track and two in the field. We also broke a Javelin and a high jump bar. We even broke two boys, with an ambulance having to come and tend to two hip injuries, one at the long jump and one at the triple.

The participation rate was fantastic, no better was this illustrated than in the senior 100m which required 13 heats. Due to lessons learnt last year, the school's size and the large number of active participants we had to make the difficult decision to not run the hurdle events this year to ensure we finished on time.

Heavy rain prior to the start of the event delayed the start of the senior high jump but quickly dissipated, and we ended up enjoying a fun and successful day in the sun.

Congratulations to Hamish Sheridan who broke his own senior boys High Jump record with a jump of 1.87m and to Sanalio Taunauta who broke the senior Shotput record with a distance of 13.93m. New student to the school William Sinclair impressed with two records, first in the junior Steeplechase (3.34) and then again in junior 300m (47.34). William will certainly be a student to watch in the future. The final record of the day went to Arden Andre in the senior 400m in a time of 52.38 a record that had been set in 1978, Arden also holds the College's 800m record.

The Junior Athletics Champion was William Sinclair, Intermediate was Tevita Finau andArden Andrenarrowly beat out Hamish Sheridan for the Senior Athletics Champion.

My thanks to all those staff who helped run the event and for the students whose positive attitude ensured we had a successful day.
