Showcase 2013

This year's biennial college Showcase was held in the Playhouse of the Academy of Performing Arts, the University of Waikato, Wednesday evening 21st August, Our boys did themselves proud with stirring renditions of a variety of music and drama. The Showcase was essentially run by the boys and included combined ensembles with sister school, Sacred Heart Girls' College, Hamilton.

Some of the highights included:

  • Sam Yu on Piano: Prelude Op.3 No.2 Composed by Rachmaninov
  • the Concert Band playing its regional Itinerant Music festival programme
  • the student driven Glee Troupe singing It's Tonight, and
  • the St John's College senior guitar group at their plucking best with a series of technically demanding yet popular medleys.

This year saw the expansion of the drum corps programme with two teams taking turns on the eleven strong instrumentation of the typically US marching drum line discipline.

It was wonderful to see the culmination of several years' work when the drama department boys put on a show that will be remembered for years to come. They have excelled in every area this year with outstanding performances, special invitations to the Globe Theatre in London and threepeat of the national drama competition, "SGCNZ Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival". Congratulations to Miss Jacqui Wheeler and her boys for such a wonderful level of performance!

The evening ended on an amazing note with the combined choir of St John's and sister school, Sacred Heart Girls' College
