-
Liturgy Group - St John's College special character is supported in music by the Liturgy Group. The group varies in size and instrumentation due to Liturgy being held during lesson time which may conflict with academic demands placed on the students. The Liturgy Group plays at Mass, beit in a classroom or in the Cathedral, and supports special assemblies. The students in the group are generally the most advanced music students in school and the group is managed by senior Music students.
-
Barbershop - The Barbershop program includes a Chorus and various Quartets. Under the direction of Mr. Ian Hawthorn, the St John's College Barbershop ensembles are regularly invited to perform at the National Festivals, based on their local efforts at regional festivals. They support school activities and represent the school by performing to outside organizations on special occasions.
-
Ceilidh Group - The Ceilidh Group is an ensemble comprising a lead violin, a violin section, acoustic guitars, lower strings, a bass, and some light percussion. It specializes in Irish folk music and over the years has instilled a special flavor into the character of the school. The Ceilidh Group has a strong tradition at St John's College, and is historically significant, being established in the early 1990s and maintained continuously over the years by Mr Ross Boyce, its founder and leader.
-
Concert Band - The Concert Band amalgamated with sister school, Sacred Heart in 2008, to participate at the National Concert Band Festival in Wellington. From there the band has developed musically and become increasingly active by supporting school activities and participating in local and national band festivals. The band's conductor, Mr. Stanbridge, rehearses the band in the Hamilton Brass Band room on Mondays, straight after school.
-
Guitar Group - The Guitar Group was formed mid 2009 by Mr. Nathan Aish and was immediately successful with dynamic and award winning performances at local and national festivals. The group is comprised of a bass guitar, drum kit, and seven electric-acoustic guitars; being six nylon string and one steel string.
-
String Orchestra - The string orchestra was established at short notice to perform at the 2009 Prize Giving and to provide performance opportunities for the string players. St John's College's major school ensemble is the concert band and there is no school orchestra for the string players. The String Orchestra continues to develop and is well placed to support school activities, and to represent the St John's College by playing to outside organisations.
