The St John's College Social Sciences Faculty offers a range of challenging and dynamicsubjects to enable students to become informed citizens.

With highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers the Social Sciences Faculty encourages students to learn the most that they can and achieve at their level to a high standard.

Social Studies is a compulsory subject at Years nine and ten. In the senior school students have a wide range of subjects to take up depending on career path and interest. Economics, Accounting, History and Classics offer a balance of internal and external Achievement Standards. Tourism offers internal Unit Standards. Both Achievement and Unit Standards credits contribute towards NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3.

Tourism

Tourism

At Year 13, students are able to enter Scholarship Examinations which are the highest level of examination offered in Year 13. These exams are very prestigious and a number of students over the last 3 years have received Scholarships in Social Science subjects.

Field trips are taken at all levels of the Curriculum. Years 9 and 10 will visit the Museum for displays and the Hamilton City Trail to cover the history of the city. Year 11 Geography visit either the Huntly or Waihi mining area as well as a farm study (either kiwifruit or dairying). Year 12 Geography study Auckland and the Taupo Volcanic area while Year 13 Geography combine with the Senior Tourism classes to visit the Rotorua and Waitomo areas. There are also field trips for History. Students are entered for various competitions such as the Waikato Times Current Events Quiz, Year 11 Geography National Skills Competition, Year 12 Geography Photography Competition and the Year 13 Geography Planning Competition.
