2010

Term 1 of 1st XI cricket turned out to be one of our most successful in recent years with the team taking the 1B title by beating Morrinsville in the 2 day final.  We also had convincing success against Hillcrest High school in the Gillett cup after bowling them out for 57.  Despite later being knocked out by St Peter’s we look forward to meeting them again along the other schools in Pool 1A as a result of our promotion.  There were some great individual performances during term 1.  Sam Cooper was the stand out with the bat , scoring 379 runs at an average of 42 (the most important part of his batting was when he “didn’t” score runs in the last session of day 1 in the final but ensured his wicket was intact for day 2!!).  Sam got great support from elder brother Jude who scored 268 runs at an average of 33 and also kept wicket cleanly throughout.  Other pleasing performances with the bat were the emergence of Hamish Whyte who along with Brett Kennedy have formed an opening partnership that will continue into 2011 and also the arrival of Matt Swney and Sam Watson who both contributed at times when it was needed most.  Another major positive on the batting front, which also came at the most critical time was Andy Mourits 54 in the final, without it we would not have made the total we needed.  We look forward to seeing a bit more of that in term 4!On the bowling, the attack was lead by captain Sam Pritchard who took the most wickets with 23.  These came at an average of 10 runs a piece with an economy rate of 2.6 runs an over.  Support came from Sam Geenty with 16 wickets, Sam Cooper with 13 and Jordan McKinnon with 10 and our general standard of fielding always kept the pressure on the opposition.  Again, our depth in bowling looks good for the coming year with three spinners to pick from in the form of Andrew Johnsen, Ryan King and the latest to the collection being Brendan O’Neil who only switched to spin half way through the season.  Looking at how far he turns it, it’s safe to say he won’t be reverting back to medium pace!!  Then we have Sam Watson who bowled well but at times with not much luck but has the potential to turn into a very promising all rounder.  The emergence of an opening bowling attack of Sam Cooper and Keagan Farrier that will take the team through to 2012 is also a major positive. So, after a couple of years where results have not been to the standard we wanted, we now have something to celebrate.  For the first time in a couple of years we have had to select a team as opposed to the team picking itself.  This competition for places has been a major factor in our success, with players not being able to take their place for granted.  To achieve success in the future we need this to continue and the signs are that we have great interest in the lower age groups.  If you are one of those and are reading this write-up ensure you keep playing!!Finally. To the 1st XI squad and everyone else involved (In particular Wayne, Mal, Allen, Alan and our leader Norm), be very proud of what we have achieved, all the effort was worth it!

2nd XI: The team had a mixed season with two wins  in a very competitive grade with some fine individual performances. Randell  Menezes scored the highest individual total when he batted through the innings fro 74 not out vs an HBHS team and there were outstanding contributions from Brett Kennedy who played one game against another HBHS team  taking 7-18, Jayden Purcell ( who came for one game from the Colts Grade ) scoring 73 against Te Aroha and James Morgan who took the most wickets.

Colts: The Term got better towards the end with the last two games won after 5 losses. The outstanding performance was from Connor Clarke who scored 96 not out against Hillcrest then took a hat trick as well.

Year 9  Premier Teams : The players were split evenly into a Country Blue team and a City Gold team. Out of the 14 teams they finished in the top 4. There was a great team spirit and support from families. The individual performances were recognised at the Hamilton Junior Cricket Association Awards evening where James McLuskie took out the individual batting award ( playing for the Gold team with two individual scores of 79 and 62 ) and Andrew Douglas who took out the bowling award for most wickets playing for the Blue Team.

The future looks encouraging with a good pool of players to call on for the next few years.
