St Johns is very proud of its Physical Education and Health Department. We provide varied and interesting programs at all year levels. Year 9 students take part in a fairly traditional series of units that include Rugby, Soccer, Hockey, Softball, Basketball, Gymnastics and Snorkelling. At year 10 students can expect to participate in Surf Life Saving, Softcross, Flag Football, American Football, Volleyball, Ultimate and Tennis.
Students at year 11 are lucky enough to be able to choose to take PE as an NCEA level One course (worth 21 credits) as well as being able to take part in core PE which includes two units standards worth 5 credits. As part of these courses students this year have taken part in International Team Handball, Basketball, Volleyball, Netball, Athletics and Touch Rugby.
Our year 12 classes run a 21 credit NCEA level 2 program. A greater emphasis is placed on theoretical work introduced in level 1 such as Functional Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics and Skill Analysis. Our year 12's also try their hand at Juggling and undertake a Paintball trip as part of their course work on Risk Management.
In year13, students work towards achieving 24 credits at level 3 and a chance to enter the scholarship exams. Students have been expected to participate in a Biathalon, analyse and improve their level of skill in Golf, organise a Rugby tournament for junior students and investigate the role of volunteers in New Zealand.
Throughout the year the department is involved with running numerous events such as Athletic Sports, Swimming Sports and Cross Country.
