Programmes

Introduction

The aim of this Guide is primarily to give parents and students a clear outline of the academic programme offered at St John's College. It contains details of the College's subject options, the internal and external examination pattern and guidelines for entry into Years 11, 12 and 13.

For further information about NCEA visit these pages: NCEA

The Guide also provides a brief description on all academic subjects offered and their inter-relationship with specific career directions. In general, we encourage students to retain a broad range of subjects for as long as possible. Parents should talk to the Dean or Teacher responsible for their son's progress if they have any queries whatsoever regarding subject choice for the following year.

Faculties

St John's College offers a wide range of subjects to cater for the different needs and interest of students who attend the School. The New Zealand Curriculum forms the over-riding structure for the subjects offered because St John's College initially prepares students for life in the wider community of New Zealand, then the world.

The St John's Curriculum is an interpretation of the New Zealand Curriculum. One adaptation which reflects something of the special Christian character of the School is that the subject of Religious Education is a core subject, at all levels, for all pupils.

Our Curriculum is evolving, a living organism, which is regularly reviewed and modified in this rapidly changing world.

Students work towards qualifications in NCEA. For subjects overseen by Industrial Training Organisations credits contribute towards both NCEA abd ITO certificates.

There is more to education than qualifications however. An Emphasis on problem solving and the skills of thinking creatively is a current goal for all academic subjects, with a view to establishing these as skills for life. St John's encourages students to set themselves personal goals of excellence in all they do: Academic, Cultural, Sporting, Interpersonal relationships, Leadership and Citizenship.
